City Government in Alliance

The City of Alliance  is a First-class city operating with a Council-Manager form of government.  Alliance was the first Nebraska city to change to this form  of government in 1921.   The council is elected at large by the citizens  while the city manager and city clerk are both hired by the council.

City Council
The city council serves as the legislative body for the city by making policy, passing ordinances, approving appropriations, and overseeing the operations of city government.

City Manager
The city manager is a hired professional manager of city government.  The manager performs the executive function of administering the daily affairs of the city.  

City Clerk
The city clerk is also a hired professional qualified to maintain the records of the city.  In Alliance this person also serves as the personnel director.





The City of Alliance is located in the center of the Nebraska Panhandle. Bordered on the south and east by the sandhills prairie it was dubbed "An Oasis in the Sandhills". The City began on March 28, 1888 and soon became a leading railroad and business center.

Area Facts

Nebraska has the western hemisphere's largest sandhill grasslands and is one of the most productive cattle-raising areas in the United States.

Historic trails in Nebraska include the Lewis Clark Trail, Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail, Overland Trail, Ox Bow Trail, Sidney-Deadwood Trails and the Pony Express route.  Pioneers used such landmarks as the Scotts Bluff national monument and Chimney Rock to move across Nebraska.


One of the world's richest fossil beds is located at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument south of Harrison.


Nebraska is the nation's largest producer and user of center-pivot irrigation.
Just north of Alliance Nebraska, along Highway 87, stands a replication of Stonehenge, England's ancient mystical alignment of stones that chart the sun and moon phases.  Carhenge, created from vintage American made automobiles, towers over the plains of Nebraska.  Go to http://www.carhenge.com/ for more information.
